YOUR CONSULTATION
When
you schedule a consultation with us, be prepared
to spend plenty of
time. We don’t believe in hurrying through this
vitally important visit. We want to have an opportunity
to thoroughly
evaluate you, suggest and discuss options for treatment,
show you photographs, and educate you regarding any
procedures you may be considering. You will have plenty
of time
to meet and discuss your concerns with our physicians,
not
simply be rushed through a short visit with a nurse
or patient care coordinator. Our goal is to inform
our patients
and understand their expectations. We want to take
the time to get to know you and want you to feel comfortable
with us.
Upon scheduling your appointment,
you will be mailed a medical history form which we ask
that you fill
out prior to your arrival. Alternatively, you may download
this from our website. We often begin your visit by showing you a short educational
video regarding the procedure(s) you may be interested in. You will then
meet with one of our experienced plastic surgery nurses
who will review your medical
history and begin discussing your areas of concern. Your physician will then
meet with you, continuing this discussion, examining you, explaining appropriate
procedures, informing you about the potential risks and benefits. You will
be given many opportunities to have your questions
answered and to review photographs
of patients who have undergone similar procedures. Once a plan has been developed,
you will be given accurate price information letting you know the total costs
for the procedure(s) discussed.
You will never be pressured into
scheduling a procedure at the time of your visit. In
fact, we urge
patients to go home and think it over, discuss with
friends
and family, consult with other plastic surgeons, and take all the time
needed to make a decision. We would be happy to answer
any further questions over
the phone or meet with you once again to help you through your decision
process. If you should decide to schedule a procedure
with us, we typically will want
to meet with you again 1-2 weeks before surgery for your pre-operative
visit. Any additional questions you may have can be answered
at that time.
Just as a patient should choose
their surgeon carefully, we feel surgeons should select
their patients
carefully. We want to make sure our patients
are well
informed, have realistic expectations regarding their outcome, and are
healthy enough to
safely undergo the procedures they are considering. Therefore, we sometimes
have to explain to patients the procedure they want is simply not appropriate
or safe
for them. While you may feel disappointed, please understand we take
our responsibility seriously. If we don’t believe
we can give you the kind of result you are seeking, and
do so safely, we would rather not perform
the procedure.
Remember, allow plenty of time
for your consultation, typically 60-90 minutes. Feel
free to bring your spouse
or friend with you, especially
if they will
be helping you make your decision. Whether or not you schedule a procedure
with
us, we want you to leave our office feeling well-informed and secure
in whatever decision you make.
